“I create gay art to create more gay and to create more art.”
“I create gay art to create more gay and to create more art.” I am a San Francisco resident and have been making art for the past 4 years. I work predominately with Oil on Canvas and Digital Art created in Procreate for the iPad Pro printed on various mediums. Much of my artwork is dedicated to amplifying queerness.
I like to blend perspectives and shapes, colors and energies, orientations and emotions. While I create, I consider how far away from an accurate representation of the image in mind I can go while still capturing a recognizable element of its origin.
I like to give shape to light, assigning color palettes to orientation, perspective, depth, atmosphere, detail, shape, and so on. I blend and merge those aspects to simultaneously cause abstraction and materialization – to stimulate a thought and to create the space for interpretation.
About the Show: “Keep Painting”
“Keep Painting” is a show created especially for the 2022 Tallinn Bearty festival about the journey of finding connectedness that LGBTQ+ folks experience. There are 16 paintings in total – all oil on canvas. To complete these works, I held a series of interviews over the course of 2020-2021 with over 20 LGBTQ+ folks of diverse backgrounds on the topics of Community, Acceptance, Love, and Empowerment. During these interviews while each person spoke, I took notes on the colors, images, and themes that occurred to me as I listened. I used their stories as inspiration to weave together their intersections and to amplify their distinctions. Each image is its own story that also holds together the threads of the others. “Keep Painting” is about creating community as much as it is about finding community.
